Isle of Wight golfers swing for charity, boosting Independent Arts’ mission

Island arts for wellbeing charity Independent Arts were the beneficiaries of a hugely successful day
of fundraising by Freshwater Bay Golf Club, Saturday 19th August.

Hosting the club’s annual charity day, members and guests played through high winds for both individual and team prizes, all the while raising funds for the chosen charity of the club’s captain, Gary Dobson.

Generous donations for the raffle
In addition to entry fees being donated to the charity fund, the clubhouse also played host to a raffle and silent auction, featuring prizes kindly donated by a host of Island businesses and golf clubs from across the South Coast.

Prizes included artwork by Linda Beale, candles from ChilliWinter, bottles of wine from Wine Therapy and Saltys restaurant, alongside many golfing vouchers for clubs including Cowes, Osborne, Shanklin and Sandown, Ferndown, and the New Forest.

Ridler: So grateful for all the prizes
Independent Arts Community Development Manager, Ralph Ridler, said of the donations,

“Independent Arts are so grateful to all the Island businesses and clubs across the south coast who were so forthcoming with prizes to support Freshwater Bay Golf Club’s fundraising efforts.

“All the prizes donated were hugely appreciated and helped us to raise a fantastic amount on the day, all of which will go a long way to supporting potentially isolated and vulnerable Isle of Wight residents through The Arts.”

£1,850 raised for the charity
In total the club’s 2023 charity day raised an incredible £1,850 for the charity, who deliver arts for wellbeing workshops in Newport, across the Island, and in care homes.

This total will be added to the golf club’s charity fund, which, alongside funds raised from many other fundraising efforts undertaken throughout the year, will be presented to the charity at the end of the calendar year.

Dobson:
Freshwater Bay Golf Club captain, Gary Dobson, said,

“I’m so pleased that our members turned out in numbers to show support for such a wonderful charity.

“The money we have raised will benefit and enrich the lives of so many people across the Isle of Wight and I’m proud that Freshwater Bay Golf Club has made such a substantial contribution.”

A competitive day
As well as raising an amazing amount for their nominated charity, competitors had the chance to win various competitions and challenges throughout the day, including best individual, best senior, closest the pin, and winning team.

The winning team on the day, pictured above, was Bob Godden, Roger Thomas, Tim Deville and Mark Vallelly.
