Isle of Wight Scouts launch new heritage blog

A new Blog chronicling the history of Isle of Wight Scouts has been launched.

Created by Malcolm Cox, one of the Isle of Wight Scouts Deputy Archivists, the site is starting to fill up with information about the heritage of the Scout movement on the Isle of Wight.

A wealth of memorabilia
Most of the information has been provided by Barry Groves, Isle of Wight Scouts’ Archivist. Having written two books on the subject, Barry has thousands of photos and enormous amounts of text and memorabilia about the history of the Isle of Wight, Scouting and Scouting on the Isle of Wight.

Fascinating stories
Malcolm told News OnTheWight,

“One of the first stories features well known Cowes yacht builder, Uffa Fox who, few people know, was also a Sea Scoutmaster.

“Uffa treated Sea Scouting with the same Devil-may-care attitude which seemed to rule his life, and you can read the amazing story about the ‘short’ sea voyage Uffa took his Scouts on.”

Among the other posts that will interest many Islanders is the story of the original Freshwater Fire Brigade and Robert Baden Powell’s only visit to the Island.

Your donations matter
Malcolm finished by saying,

“We appreciate any offers of donations of Scouting Heritage items or of assistance in our task to bring Scouting history to our Scouts and the wider pubic.”
