Thanks to Tim Isard from the Isle of Wight Symphony Orchestra for details of this season’s opening concert. Ed
Saturday 19th November sees the Isle of Wight Symphony Orchestra take to the stage for the opening concert of their new series. The concert starts at 7.15pm and will appeal to all ages.
The concert will start with the rarely performed overture Yorrick by the English composer Geoffrey Bush. Written in 1949, it is typical of English light music made famous by better known composers such as Eric Coates. Unfortunately Geoffrey Bush died in 1998, but he is survived by his widow who will be making the trip to the Island with some of his grand children for the performance.
Stankov Ensemble
The Orchestra will then be joined by the Stankov Ensemble for a performance of the Triple Concerto by Beethoven.
This work, written for Piano, Violin and Cello as the solo instruments, is always a popular work, but not often performed because of the cost in paying three soloists!
Calm Sea and Prosperous Voyage
After the interval the Orchestra will then play another overture, this time composed by Mendelssohn and entitled “Calm Sea and Prosperous Voyage”.
As with all Mendelssohn’s music, the overture is full of wonderful tunes and inspiring orchestration.
Ending with Elgar
A quote from the Mendelssohn overture is found in the final work in the concert, this being the ever popular “Enigma Variations” by Edward Elgar. The set of variations are representations of some of Elgar’s acquaintances and family.
Perhaps the most famous variation in “Nimrod” which poignantly is played at this time of year at the annual remembrance services.
