Finn Mannion

Isle of Wight Symphony Orchestra welcomes soloist Finn Mannion for an evening of Elgar

Remarkable cello soloist Finn Mannion returns to the Isle of Wight on Saturday 18th January when he will perform Elgar’s Cello Concerto with the Isle of Wight Symphony Orchestra.

Finn grew up in the Scottish Highlands and enjoys a rich and varied musical life.

A cellist who is ‘going places in supersonic fashion’
He has been described in Courier magazine as a cellist who is ‘going places in supersonic fashion’. 2024 has been a notable year for Finn, winning first prize in the 72nd Royal Over-Seas League Competition with his Trio Archai and making his Wigmore Hall debut in June.

Elgar’s Cello Concerto pulses with a particular melancholy that the composer made his own. His orchestration is always masterly and ensures that the soloist is alternately a partner and adversary of the orchestra in true concerto style. Since the first performance in 1919 it has become a classic of the repertoire and was also the composer’s last great work.

Wagner and Strauss
Also on the programme is Wagner’s stormy overture to his opera ‘The Flying Dutchman and the elegant Mozart-inspired ‘Wind Serenade’ by Richard Strauss.

The programme concludes with the ‘Symphonic Dances’ by Rachmaninov, a three-movement suite that draws on folk idioms and the composer’s reminiscences of Russia. It has always been one of Rachmaninov’s most popular works.

Where and when
The concert takes place at Medina Theatre on Saturday 18th January 2025, beginning at 7.15pm. Book your tickets through the Medina Theatre website.

The orchestra is delighted to be supporting The Southampton and Isle of Wight Music Trust, Middleton Bursary Scheme at all of its concerts this season. The scheme provides invaluable financial support to young musicians facing challenging circumstances.

Sponsorship from Wightlink is invaluable in helping the orchestra maintain the high quality of their concerts from year to year.
