IW council Website given lowest score, again

Isle of Wight council has, again, been given a one out of four rating for their iwight Website.

Socitm, the association that represents ICT professionals working in Local Authorities, surveyed all 433 local authority Websites, evaluating them to establish how easy to use members of the public would find them.

Last year, when the council’s Website dropped from two stars to one star in the survey, the council communications department, who controls the council’s Website said, “We disagree with some of the assessments and we will be questioning those.” We contacted Socitm four months after the 2012 report and they told us there had been no contact from IW council.

New site originally due last year
Back in March 2012 the council said they planned to “launch the redesigned site in the coming months.” They followed this in July, then saying “we expect to launch later this year.”

The council now says that they hope to launch the new version of the site within weeks.

New site to “reduce the amount of content online”
We’ve raised concerns with the council that they’ve said that one of “the main drivers for updating the website” is “to reduce the amount of content online and focus on what is important to you.”

We’re awaiting a reply as to what will be removed; how the public will access this information in the future; what the criteria for removal is; and who is overseeing this.

It doesn’t surprise me.

It is not a straightforward site and it is difficult to find exactly what you want.

I had difficulty finding parking information, season tickets and charges as the pages didn’t seem to be interlinked.

There would also appear to be some redundant links, and links to other websites that lead you astray.

Still, what would you expect from this council?

I think they should set up a DNA database for each page, it would be much easier to locate them when required…

I thought Stuart Love was a computer expert or is he like the other expert we have on Education – Pugh? Why exactly do we employ these experts? Oh I know so that we can bring is consultants to (allegedly) fix all our problems.

The usual problem with this council, deliberately making it difficult for anyone to find information that they do not wish you to see! Its there but its so well hidden that it cannot be found by the man in the street. Please remember to urge all of your family and friends to use their votes on 2nd May and help us to get rid of this misbegotton… Read more »

There have been two occasions recently when I needed to find some local information on the Council website.

I gave up and Googled it.

It is, quite simply, rubbish. (The Council website not Google that is)

It is a difficult site to navigate and the information you usually want is not usually there,or you e-mail a contact there and get no reply.

If it was efficient and user freindly they should treat those with enquiries just like a person physically asking a question at County Hall.

You cant find the content now, so removing it will save the bother of searching I guess.

It’s not really an outstanding piece of design and it’s difficult to navigate. The search facility is often useless and needs a re-think, so that it can find what you want even though you may have misspelt something. The Planning Applications website is particularly useless and can be so slow at times as to be almost unusable. When the Pennyfeathers Application was on the go, attracting some… Read more »

In a nutshell: it is the most efficient way to hide things they are required to publish!

Try looking at the new Isle of Wight Council website. If you thought the last one was bad then this is worse. Do you think the Isle of Wight Council realise their remit is to improve life and services on the Island. Somehow I don’t think so. I couldn’t even find how to get an up to date list of those standing in the local elections, the… Read more »

Err, did someone press the ‘go’ button a month too early on this? Where have all the contents gone? The site looks like it’s been designed by the IT team, loads of the links aren’t working and some of the suggestions for visitors are bizarre to say the least.

Who is responsible for this?
