Newport fighter, Jono Bate of Vectis MMA is representing the Island in this weekend’s Mixed Martial Art (MMA) spectacular, Shock N Awe at the Mountbatten Centre, Portsmouth.
This is Bate’s first amateur level U170lbs bout, against James Wark of Gym01, Portsmouth.
Nine months training
Bate, 21, who has been training with Vectis MMA at both their Newport and Ryde classes since March this year always had an interest in the sport, and went along after seeing an advert on Facebook.
Head coach for Vectis MMA, Alex Box has worked closely with Jono to help him improve all aspects of his fighting technique and nutritional needs leading up to the competition, and the Vectis MMA team used practices, open mat sparring and interclub competitions to help Bate and others cut their teeth.
Bate is the fourth fighter from Vectis MMA to be taking part in Shock N Awe, following in the footsteps of Indy Briar, Ewan Wheeler and Alex Box.
