Kieran Page, originally from Ryde on the Isle of Wight, put in a stirling effort at Sunday’s Cycling Crit in Ventnor.
He led many times during the race and looked like a promising win in the closing stages, until some sudden changes in the final two laps.
We caught up with him while some of the awards were being presented (hence some of the background noise in the recording). Kieran was the person who introduced the “Chess on Bikes” definition of the cycling Criterium to us.
Inspired by last Isle of Wight Island Games
We spoke to Kieran about the psychology of breaking from the pack and the impressive level of support that the crowd had given the Isle of Wight riders.
He told VB, “That’s why I’ve come back. It’s 20 years since the last Island games here – I was a young lad, of eight years or so. I’ve got lots of good memories from going to watch the athletics and the swimming, watching people I respected at the time.
“As I live in Nice now, I’m not in a position to help with the organisation, so I’ve tried my hardest to be as fit as I can, to come back and give the young kids something to cheer about.” [audio:http://otw-audio.s3.amazonaws.com/keiran-page-island-games-after-crit.mp3]
