Thanks to Suzanne and Alan for this update from the Aberdeen Asset Management Cowes Week. Ed
Ladies Day was first introduced in 2006 as a way of celebrating women in sailing. Now, with women comprising at least a third of the 8,500 competitors at Aberdeen Asset Management Cowes Week, organisers are keen to further embrace the day by recognising the outstanding contribution, commitment or achievement of women in sailing, which includes those who have undertaken remarkable challenges and who will be racing during the Week.
Make your nomination
Do you know a female sailor who you think should be recognised as worthy winner of the Ladies Day Trophy?
If so, Cowes Week Limited would like to hear from you via the web-site.
Ladies Day this year will be held on Thursday 16 August and even if you are not keen on sailing there are special events and promotions on the day for all ladies.
Outstanding contribution to sailing
The winner of this year’s trophy will join previous winners in celebrating their outstanding contribution to sailing.
Winners in the past have included the late Betty Moore who had raced at 60 consecutive Cowes Weeks, Gavia Wilkinson-Cox who won for her achievements in the Dragon class and for her work in raising funds for the British Olympic teams since the 1990s, and Louise Morton, an extremely popular local winner, (pictured) who won the Trophy for her dedication to the sport, which included five years spent reviving the Quarter Ton Class.
Last year’s winner was Tina Scott for her outstanding contributions to the XOD Class especially in what was the XOD Class Centenary Year.
If you have someone in mind to be nominated for the Ladies Day Trophy, all you need to do is complete the on-line form, which includes a box to explain, in no more than 250 words, the reasons for the nomination.
