St John Ambulance volunteers on the Isle of Wight are offering people the chance to learn the skills needed to be the difference between a life lost and a life saved with an open evening next week (Thursday 22 September).
‘Save a Life September’
It’s part of the first aid charity’s annual ‘Save a Life September’ first aid drive, which is taking place for the sixth year in a row.
Research carried out by St John Ambulance showed that 97% of people believe that learning first aid is important and yet, astonishingly, just one in ten people have the skills to save a life.
St John Ambulance is determined to change this and will once again be offering free first aid demonstrations across the country. Since it started in 2011 the annual campaign has attracted great interest and has taught simple yet life saving first aid tips to hundreds of thousands of members of the public.
Open evening
In Newport volunteers are holding an open evening with first aid demonstrations as follows:

What you’ll learn
At the events, volunteers from the charity will demonstrate five easy-to-follow techniques that could potentially save a life. They will also give out information on where to go for more free tips and first aid advice.
The youth groups on the Island, including Ryde Badgers*, are also holding open evenings for families and friends to learn first aid.
For those looking for quick, easily accessible information, the free, highly popular St John Ambulance app is available on smartphones and the Website offers demo videos, an interactive game, and lots of free advice.
Sally Elliot, Schools and Community Training Manager in the South East, said:
“The opportunity to learn first aid is something that everyone should take up. You never know when you might need to use it – either at home, in the street, at work or at school, so why not take some time to visit one of our free SALS first aid demonstrations and watch five basic techniques being demonstrated by our local volunteers?
“You’ll also be able to take away a free pocket first aid guide to these techniques and find out more about the longer courses we run where you can pick up a number of other life saving skills.
“Once again, this year our aim is to reach as many people as possible with our SALS demonstrations so that more people are equipped with the skills to save a life. Help us to make sure that there are more people in the community as a result who understand how to be the difference between a life lost and a life saved.”
