It has always struck me that the IOW highways department is, in my view, worryingly ad-hoc and out of touch in its workings.
Previously you may remember me commenting about ripping out of perfectly functioning parking machines, being replaced by those which squirt water in people’s faces should they try to burgle them-from memory.
About three have ever been successfully broken into on the whole Island – never fear – the highways dept is here – let’s spend loads of money ripping them all out-road closures / inconvenience / trouble to tourists in peak season.
What about decluttering?
Then, almost whenever an area is designated ‘conservation’ – there they are again, huge metal signs, despite government guidance specifying ‘decluttering ‘ of these areas – weevil fish, ship wash etc – things that never existed before, obviously.
Sad they had to recently scrub out the lifesaver info and first aid point stuff on all the signs (given they don’t exist any more).
£60,000 on Green Line signs
Not content with that, however, more metal poles erected all over the Island – the green ones cost £60,000 (Foi) – I don’t know what the blue ones cost – they bear no relation to any map or guidance.
Have you noticed them – ‘green line’ – completely meaningless – sometimes they’re even attached to signs bearing the same place name.
Bewildering …. don’t get me started on signs in the AONB!
