Wrestling posters on the phone boxes by Broc Silva

Letter: Why am I (and a few others) the only ones who are sufficiently irritated about litter to actually do anything about it?

News OnTheWight always welcomes a Letter to the Editor to share with our readers – unsurprisingly they don’t always reflect the views of this publication. If you have something you’d like to share, get in touch and of course, your considered comments are welcome below.

This from Broc Silva, Newport, whose litter picking we featured last year and in 2019. Ed

I’ve just removed around 14 manky, sticky wrestling and circus posters from the phone box outside a well known ‘restaurant’ in Newport.

This took approx ten minutes of my Sunday… a day for doing nothing. I think it’s about time these promoters were fined.

I think Medina Theatre should be fined along with them. I also think the companies that own bus shelters, phone boxes, stree furniture, etc., should be made to remove such adverts asap, otherwise its just me – unpaid – being the only adult in the town.

Sick of doing other people’s work for them
As it is I will be going up along the route to IW college yet again due to the mankier students’ insistence on using every hedge, every Bush, every bit of open ground as somewhere to throw litter.

I have been clearing these areas for years now but it’s still as bad as ever.

Lukely Brook
The drinkers still throw cans into the hedges next to Lukely Brook from their seats along Foxes Road.

One that sits drinking in the copse next to Sainsbury’s garage still fills the undergrowth with his detritus and despite Sainsbury’s promising to keep an eye it’s getting as bad as ever.

Opposite Sainsbury’s
The hedges opposite Sainsbury’s garage are full of litter and those same old dog poo bags left by the same vile pigs are there yet again.

Is this my job then? Isn’t this the responsibility of our council? Why am I the only one sufficiently irritated into actually doing anything about it?

The dual carriageway bridge
The banks of the dual carriageway bridge are littered with cans and broken glass from the regular that simply throws his empties behind the undergrowth. Could that be one of the guys littering by Lukely Brook?

How do I know? Because I’ve encountered the same group of heavy drinkers there on numerous occasions. I even asked them [politely] to use the bins, but when they’re drunk they forget.

Whose responsibility?
My job? Or is this the responsibility of the council and the police? Fines?

No-one seems to care enough to try and resolve the issue so guess which mug ends up doing it?

I don’t want to work for free
I’m getting old and lazy now. I don’t want to work for free. I’d like to receive gifts for all the hard work I’ve put in. I’d like to never pay for another coffee or cake in every cafe in Newport for the rest of my life.

I must have put in hundreds of hours of work trying to improve the town and the surrounding area and our council can’t even stop the local promoters of a nasty wrestling event from littering our town when they have the location of the event and the names of the culprits in front of them.

Anyway, I’ll be out there picking up everyone’s litter again soon. If you see me a coffee is around £3 a time. Feel free to buy me one, or tell me what a wonderful job I’m doing.

Also, write to YOUR council and tell them you hate litter too.
