Three hours of back-breaking litter picking – because no-one else would take responsibility says Broc

Litter picking hero, Broc Silva, has been at it again. Noticing piles of litter and detritus in a small copse in Newport, reporting it, the buck being passed and so he just gets on and sorts it himself.

Broc explains,

“On 26th March I contacted a council member to point out the horrible state of the copse next to Sainsbury’s garage on Foxes Rd, Newport.

“I got a reply on the 28th. On the 30th I asked if anything was being done. On the 31st I received an email advising me that the environment officer had attended and was now in touch with Sainsbury’s (who own the land).

“On the 2nd and 3rd I took a look, but still no action.”

Three hours of back-breaking work
So on Monday, Broc just set about cleaning the mess himself.

He told News OnTheWight that it took him roughly three hours of strenuous labour to clear and took seven large green council bags. Aside from the usual litter you might expect to see, such as drinks bottles and crisp packets, there was also a discarded microwave, a quilt and other detritus.

Silva: The IWC cannot fulfil its obligations as far as our environment goes
Broc told News OnTheWight,

“The thing that really niggles is that the buck gets passed rather than the job just getting done. I don’t care who owns what – like you can ‘own’ land – but, of course, wealthy people do.

“I just wanted to highlight that this council (and undoubtedly every other) simply cannot fulfil its obligations as far as our environment goes. Easier to just do it ourselves and post the results on an IW community group where everyone can moan too and nothing ever change.

“I would like a Blue Peter badge and  some ice cream.”

If anyone wants to offer Broc an ice cream, a cup of coffee, a pat on the back or even a Blue Peter badge (he’s not joking) you can find him on social media.

Hopefully Sainsbury’s might offer him some or all of the above.
