Butterfly emerging from pupae

Letter: Why can’t the general public buy pupae to help increase the butterfly population?

This from Peter Geach. Ed

As a young boy I remember a myriad of butterflies in the gardens and fields; Red Admirals, Tortoiseshell, Peacock, Cabbage Whites etc.

Today very few, just the odd one or two.

Not available to the general public
I’ve enquired about buying UK Butterfly Pupae to place in the garden to hatch, so far without success.  Butterfly breeders exchange pupae, but they are not available to the general public, has been my response.

I believe in self help.  So why is it not possible to obtain pupae of Butterflies natural to UK conditions and hatch them out?

What is the problem?
If we need an incubator of sorts I’m sure they could readily be made by the average ‘do it yourselfer’ if told what is needed.

In nature probably an old shed or box would do.

Can your readers advise what would be needed to hatch pupae and where they can be bought?

Many thanks.
