Expect long delays if you are travelling through Sandown / Brading this afternoon.
According to information from Islandline Trains, a lorry has hit and is wedged under the bridge between Sandown and Brading, so all services have been suspended.
All traffic is being diverted, some through Marshcombe Shute in Yarbridge which many readers will already be aware of, is operating a one way restriction at the moment whilst larger safety barriers are installed.
Update 20.00: Island Roads say “Due to the earlier lorry incident at Perowne Way, Marshcombe Shute has now been made two-way.”
A spokesperson for Islandline trains said,
“Due to a vehicle striking a bridge between Sandown and Brading, all services are suspended on the Island Line until further notice.
“We have requested a structural engineer to examine the bridge. Until the structural engineer has attended and remedial work is completed, services will remain suspended.
“Please accept our apologies for the disruption to your journey.”
They go on to add there’ll be no trains between Ryde Pier Head and Shanklin until at least 6.30pm.
Update 22.00:
Islandline trains say disruption is expected until at least 11am on Wednesday morning.
Update 20.00: Islandline Trains say that services will be disrupted until at least the end of the day.
Damage to the bridge looks extensive as the photo above shows. The photo to the right is spread across social media. We couldn’t track down the original source for this picture. If it’s yours please let us know and we’ll add a credit.
Diversions for buses
Southern Vectis tweeted out that Routes 2 and 3 will be diverted via Yaverland and St Helens towards Ryde and via Yarbridge and Yaverland towards Ventnor.
Island Roads are on their way to put up road closed signs, but have not advised of the diversion routes yet.
Thanks to Linda Bassett for the heads-up.
