Island pupils are being encouraged to invent a new sport to win a national competition.
Andrew Turner, the Island’s MP has written to schools with details of the competition run by INEOS and the Chemical Industries Association, which is open to all pupils and those who are home schooled. They want youngsters to imagine what sport will look like in 2050.
Use pictures and words
Primary school age entrants are asked to draw a picture of their idea, whilst secondary school age students are asked to write 750 words on what they think future sport will be like or invent new rules for an existing sport.
The closing date for the competition is 30th May.
Cash prizes
The winner in each age group will receive £300 with second and third prizes of £150 and £75 and an expenses paid trip to London to receive their prize at a House of Commons reception.
Their schools will receive £1,000, £500 and £250 respectively.
“Would be great to welcome an Island winner”
Mr Turner said, “I know Island students could come up with some exciting and novel ideas about the future of sport in this Olympic year. Looking at changes that have taken place in sport in the past might give clues to how it might change over the next few decades so some creative thinking might lead to a worthwhile prize.
“Although this is a national competition last year only around 500 entries were received from 26 schools so with six winning places a carefully considered entry should have a good chance of winning. It would be great to welcome an Island winner, or even winners, to the House of Commons to receive a prize so I wish everyone who enters the best of luck.”
