MP questions Eurovia over asphalt plant proposal

Isle of Wight MP, Andrew Turner, has written to Group Managing Director of Eurovia, Scott Wardop, outlining a number of concerns in relation to the proposed asphalt plant at Medina Wharf.

The eleven point letter questions several statements made by Eurovia, calls for assurances on providing jobs for local residents, raises concerns about harmful toxins created during the production of asphalt, seeks clarification on the relationship between the Highways PFI and Eurovia’s proposed asphalt plant and much more.

Excellent letter which demands straight answers. Should the Council’s claimed position turn out to be correct: that a new Island plant is not an integral part of the offer; then what enhanced terms within the PFI to the benefit of the Island has the Council sought and obtained from Eurovia should permission be granted? Eurovia would only be proposing this development if it considered it offered significant… Read more »

Mr Pugh is going to be talking to his minister in his “secret” closed door meeting in Daish Way, Newport about PFI, related Asphalt and Ferries. I wonder what they wil be cooking up?

An extremely good letter, Mr Turner.

A robust challenge to Eurovia on our behalf by the Island’s MP, which exposes much of the smoke and mirrors approach that has characterised the PFI/asphalt plant issue from the outset to the present day. It’s good to see Andrew Turner standing up to be counted alongside the sensible and measured objectors who make up WRAP, plus other concerned Islanders. Such a marked contrast to the sullen… Read more »

Are there two different Conservative parties on the island?

We need to know in time for the May IW Council elections!

Mr Turner is representing his constituents and protecting our health and welfare as he was elected to do.

What exactly are Mr Pugh and Mr Giles doing?

Surely they can’t be in the same political party as Mr Turner or am I missing something?

There is only one Conservative party on the Island but the members in important positions have their own agendas. I am very pleased to see our MP take this company on and he will get lots of votes from it. OK. Mr. Pugh is keeping his head down and hoping that the whole PFI will not collapse in the same way as schools, child protection and adult… Read more »

This excellent letter asking the right questions gives the lie to the assertion that Andrew Turner is ineffective in representing the island. I imagine most of his detractors have a party political axe to grind, and I say this as someone who is not naturally a Tory voter. While the boy Pugh fiddles and wriggles and plays dirty politics in secret, AT is getting on and doing… Read more »

An exceptional letter! Mr Turner is asking fair and reasonable questions on behalf of his constituents and I hope this will set an example for other Island Politicians. On that point, I would like to acknowledge that Roger Mazillius was also very clear in the questions he raised at the recent permit application meeting. Councillors Bacon, Barry and Fuller were all very robust in their questioning and… Read more »

Thank you Andrew Turner for leading where our local and IW Council politicians have failed to do so. The process of this planning application for the asphalt plant has been a travesty from the moment an essential Environmental Impact Assessement was deemed unnecessary right up to the moment that IW Council officers indicated they would rather agree to conditions (which will in all probability be unenforceable) than… Read more »

Interesting that Council Officials repeatedly refer to DEFRA when challenged on air quality management …. and now it seems the UK Government is in trouble on this issue =>

I agree – a very good and challenging letter by Andrew Turner. Whether Mr. Wardrop, the Group MD of Eurovia, has either the courtesy or necessary wit to formulate a fulsome reply to Mr. Turner’s letter remains to be seen. I am not waiting with bated breath! Mr Wardrop’s fellow director, Patrick Reilly (the Eurovia executive present at the packed meeting in East Cowes last September) gave… Read more »

er…………………I see in today’s CP that there plans afoot to build houses and a luxury hotel on the brownfield site adjacent to the Folly Inn. Have these developers not heard about the proposed Eurovia asphalt plant just down the river?

I think someone should break it to them …………..gently.

Thank you James Luke for that interesting BBC news item. Why is it that our IW Council politicians do not understand the issue of our basic human right to enjoy clean air? Our local councils are opposed to this asphalt plant, Our MP Mr Turner is opposed to this asphalt plant, Our MEP Mr Taylor is opposed to this asphalt plant and is currently fighting a campaign… Read more »
