MSA Autotest Championship

Many thanks to Martyn Cutler for this write up of the Isle of Wight Car Club event that took place last weekend. Ed

MSA Autotest ChampionshipSunday 31st May saw the Isle of Wight Car Club holding and event at Cheverton Chalk Pit for the second round of their MSA autotest championship.

With the weather gods looking favourably upon us and with a carefully planned track, the day began in earnest. Flamboyance was in abundance from both Richard Weaver in his Mk1 Escort and Jimmy Clements in a Sierra Sapphire and other competitors including Toby Allen showed committed driving thus ensuring a very entertaining day for both drivers and spectators alike .

Andy Williams set the early pace in his motorcycle engined special recording a time of just under 50 seconds, this was soon cut down to size by Weaver as he pulled a 45 second run out of the bag.

Russell Thomson in a lightened and modified Mk3 Golf was hot on the tail of Weaver and for most of the day the pair were head and shoulders above the rest of the chasing pack. While Thomson came in a very credible 2nd overall he was not able to catch the rally car wielding Weaver as he finished with a final time of 43:85, quarter of a second ahead of his nearest rival and 2 seconds ahead of the rest.

Notably Toby Allen in a svelte Suzuki Swift finished third and this also meant he would end the day leading the championship after his sterling performance at BAE Systems earlier in the month. Proof once again that consistency often pays off.

Final Top five positions:-
Richard Weaver 43:85
Russell Thomson 44:11
Toby Allen 46:09
Andrew Leppard 46:37
Tim Thomson 46:71

Overall championship positions:-
Toby Allen 95 Points
Richard Weaver 93 Points
Jai Nolan 89 Points

Finally we would like to extend our thanks to both the landowners for use of the track and our sponsors.
