A Delegated Decision Report was released yesterday confirming boundary revisions for Conservation areas in Ryde, Ryde St John’s and Shanklin.
In addition, parts of Sandown are to also be established as a Conservation Area.
The idea for establishing a Conservation Area is to secure “a higher quality of design and facilitating the retention of features (whether they be trees, stone walls or buildings)”.
This in turn, should lead to a more consistent approach to planning decisions and protect the features that are key elements of towns and villages.
Decision made under delegated powers
The document below, outlines the case for the decision which was made under delegated powers by the Cabinet Member responsible, Cllr George Brown.
The four boundary revisions considered and approved were …
The revised boundary for Ryde will expand on the existing Ryde Conservation Area (designated in December 1969, revised in 1999). It has been characterised as having five strong character areas: the Esplanade, Pier and Seafront; the Historic Core and Commercial Centre; Regency and Victorian Housing; Pelhamfield, Ryde School and All Saints Church; and Ryde Cemetery.
The revised boundary for Ryde St John’s will expand on the exiting Ryde St John’s Conservation Area (designated in 1988). It has been characterised as having three strong character areas: Appley and St John’s; the Church of St John the Baptist; and St John’s Park.
The revised boundary for Shanklin will expand on the existing Shanklin Conservation Area (designated in 1971). It has been characterised as having 4 distinct character areas: The Old Chine and Old Village; the High Street, Keats Green and Esplanade; and Big Mead and Highfield Road.
The Sandown Conservation Area has been characterised as having two distinct character areas: the Resort Centre; and the Residential Area
