Last Friday, a new garden was officially opened at St Mary’s Hospital in Newport.
The garden is in memory of Jenny Cocks who worked as a Sister and Senior Nurse at St. Mary’s Hospital for many years.
Guy Eades, Healing Arts Director for NHS Isle of Wight said: “The garden is a fitting tribute to Jenny as it was her idea that St. Mary’s Hospital should have such a garden.
“Jenny strongly believed in the power of the caring environment to nourish healing and spiritual growth and I think she would be delighted with what we have created for everyone to enjoy.”
Designed and constructed by Craig Ratcliff and team at CAR Gardens, Ryde, the garden is complemented with furniture by Paul Sivell and artwork by Martin Evans or GloryArtGlass.
The garden has been designed to be usable all year round, with several separate seating areas.
Maria Murphy, Chemotherapy Nurse Specialist at St. Mary’s Hospital said: “A big thank you to the ‘Friends of St. Mary’s and the many individuals and organisations throughout the Island community who have supported the Chemotherapy Unit and given so generously towards this very worthwhile project. We now have a wonderful garden for everyone to enjoy and the Chemotherapy Unit looks out onto the garden so if the weather lets us down, our patients will still be able to enjoy it from inside the unit.”
