Reports that a wind turbine plant will be built in the UK by German firm, Siemens, could be welcome news for many of the highly skilled former Vestas staff living on the Isle of Wight.
It hasn’t been revealed where the plant will be located yet, although it’s anticipated it will be on the East coast of the UK, so it’s possible we’ll see some people leaving the Island in order to chase skilled work.
On the same day that The Guardian reports on the new plant, the BBC publishes results of a survey of former Vestas workers.
Two thirds surveyed have found work again
The BBC have been following the lives of many former Vestas workers after they lost their jobs last year, when the Newport turbine plant closed down.
The report tells how of the 75 people surveyed, two thirds have since found new work, but many of those are now earning far less than before.
Former Vestas employee, Penny Draper from Freshwater, is featured in the BBC article and her story will also be aired on BBC Radio Solent tonight from 7pm.
