New landslide affects two roads and multiple properties in St Lawrence (updated)

Last updated:

Two roads and several properties have been affected by a landslide in the St Lawrence area on the south coast of the Isle of Wight.

It’s thought that one property on Old Park Road and just above it, several properties on Hunts Road have been affected.

Just above Hunts Road is Undercliff Drive, which was closed to through-traffic ten years ago following two areas of significant land movement.

SSEN have been in attendance over the weekend to repair the underground power line.

Partial road closure
Old Park Road, which is usually one-way and loops east to west and back to east, has been made two-way as the road is closed from the former Old Park Hotel.

A spokesperson from Isle of Wight council told News OnTheWight,

“Council officers have been on site supporting the residents and the council’s building control team have visited affected properties and advised residents.

“Further surveys and monitoring will be undertaken on Monday.

“At this time, private road closures and Rights of Way closures are in place.

“We do advise that drivers and walkers stay away from the affected area and respect closure signs and diversions.  The land movement is on private roads and contained within private property.

“Residents have expressed that they do not wish their personal circumstances or photographs of their properties to be reported by media.”

Our thoughts are with all those affected by this latest land movement, which is likely to be a response of the heavy rain experienced in the autumn of 2023.
