Police Escort Buses Around Festival Traffic Jams (Video)

Police escorted buses on The Isle of Wight yesterday in an attempt to reduce the impact of the significant traffic delays caused by the people going to the Festival.

Clip from film:SB Clarke shot a video of it in action.

In it you can see school buses, regular Southern Vectis buses and Festival buses being taken, on the opposing side of the road, though a traffic light junction.

Watch it after the jump.

Well done to the police, they did well, shame the Isle of Wight council wasn’t as bright. 90.000 is to many people for Newport and this proves it. its only friday afternoon

I think this is a freak event coupled with some awful organisation, not just by the festival organisers but also by ferry companies so keen to cash in they kept shipping cars over despite there being no way of unloading. However, to make sweeping statements that Newport / The Island can’t cope is just ridiculous. This will (hopefully) be a lesson learned and will not be repeated.… Read more »

So your logic is if you are retired and comfortably off, then you should not complain because people who need to work have a right to enter into any business venture which disrupts their life.

I can start a pig-rearing business next door to your house if I need the money.

I don’t really get your point? As far as I am aware, and with my somewhat limited knowledge of pig rearing it is a little more long term than 4 nights / days of the year. This whole fiasco has been caused by a massive lack of planning by council, ferry companies and event organisers. As I said in my post hopefully a lesson has been learnt,… Read more »

The sight was churned up Wednesday am by the lorries and site workers, then a downpour Wed night. Thursday anybody looking out of their window would have seen an angry brooding sky that presaged a downpour. A reasonably bright individual would have looked at that, looked at the state of the car park field and thought “Aye up! We’re in for a bit of trouble here”. So… Read more »

Personally, I have nothing against having a large festival on the Island.
But what I object to is having it in the wrong place, i.e. public premises, urban environment with a large school, hospital and crematorium in its vicinity.
And please don’t accuse me of Nimbyism.
Talking of which: why don’t we swap with Wellow? Their wind turbines for our Pop Festival?

It won’t move because Solo has bought the majority of the land it is held on currently. Other than Seaclose park which isn’t up for sale (probably.) No way is it going to go anywhere else.

I hate going on buses but if they now get police escort (paid for by the tax payer) i might reconsider.

There is no doubt that after the event there needs to be a debrief to see how things could of been handled differently. No one event on the island has the right to cause such chaos but on the other hand as this message gets typed the IOW is having 6 hours of publicity on Sky Arts and you can feel the atmosphere oozing through the tele. I… Read more »

Yeah No.5… after all people missing funerals and funerals not being able to make it to the crematorium are not ‘mountains’ but mere ‘mole hills to those affected… aren’t they?

You are always moaning about how it affected others. So how has it directly affected you. It seems to me, you are never happy unless you are moaning so John Giddings has made you the happiest man on the IoW

If you call stating the facts ‘moaning’ then guilty as charged. Problem is some people don’t like the truth but I try and see it from poor old Joe public’s point of view rather than the money winners.
