If you haven’t seen the drawings of the new primary schools proposed for Sandown and Gatten & Lake yet, plans and a video have been released in the construction press this week.
The Isle of Wight council signed a deal to buy two, what are described as, ‘pre-designed primary schools’.
By using standardised products, the supplying company, Sunesis, claims to “aim to achieve a build cost per pupil of £8,500 – £10,000 against a typical school cost per pupil range of £15,000 – £20,000.”
The speed of construction is significantly faster than traditional building methods as well.
Gatten & Lake Primary School in Shanklin
The Keynes model (named after John Maynard Keynes, the British economist), with a one-form entry has been chosen for Gatten & Lake.
The company says it “comes with a large flexible learning zone and a range of optional extras such as an internal sliding wall, play equipment, furniture and a canopy”.
Base cost is listed at £2.3m.
The Bay CE Primary School in Sandown
This will be the larger Dewey model with two-form entry. The company’s Website says that it’s hoped that construction can start in November, as the council hasn’t secured planning permission for the site yet. 35 weeks is given as the construction time and the base cost at £4.5m.
Roof top playground
The playground will be on the roof top, as the site is ‘more restricted’.
The Sunesis schools have also been used by Warwickshire County Council and Southampton City Council. Willmott Dixon is the construction partner.
Video
A video of the Gatten & Lake primary school with all of the options (uncertain if these will be used on the Island schools), such as grass roof, solar panels, etc is shown below.
