Andrew Turner, the Island’s MP, has organised a public meeting in East Cowes Town Hall on Saturday 16th April at 2pm to give Islanders a say on the future use of the currently unused parts of Osborne House.
The Osborne Estates Act of 1902 says that the parts of the Osborne Estate (not the bit pictured) should be used for the benefit of members of the Armed Forces, Civil Service, and their families.
This requirement was fulfilled until ten years ago by the buildings being used as the King Edward VII Convalescence Home.
Closed in 2000
This closed in 2000 and the rooms covered by the Osborne Estates Act have been empty ever since.
English Heritage, who now manage the public areas, would like to repeal the Acts to allow better use the facilities.
Mr Turner said, “I strongly believe that, if the Act is to be repealed, Islanders should be given the opportunity to make their views known and suggest alternative uses to English Heritage. Everyone is welcome at this public meeting which will give them the opportunity to help shape the future of one of the Island’s architectural jewels and visits to the closed off areas can be arranged in advance.”
