Rare Plant Goes On Display At Botanic Garden

This in from the council, in their own words. The plant is being planted later this week, but won’t be fully flowered for a few weeks yet, so don’t all rush down there at once. Ed

A rare vine that is native to the tropical forests of the Philippines is going on display at Ventnor Botanic Garden.

The Jade Vine – or Strongylodon Macrobotrys to give it its full name – has a striking jade-green colour when it is fully flowered.

It can only be grown in three other gardens in the UK at Kew, the Eden Project and Cambridge Botanic Garden.

The vine has been made available to Ventnor Botanic Garden as part of a plant exchange with Cambridge.

“Most amazing thing to admire”
Chris Kidd, Head Gardener at Ventnor said “The Jade Vine is a plant very few people get to see close up unless they travel to a specialist botanic garden or are fortunate to see one in its natural habitat in the Phillipines.

“Once it is flowered, it is a most amazing thing to admire and I am sure will be a very popular attraction to visitors.”
