Rising water levels prompt flood warning near Newport’s Lukely Brook

The Environment Agency has issued a flood alert for Lukely Brook, Newport.

Issued at 4.01pm today (Thursday), the warning reads:

The water level in the Lukely Brook at Newport is high and rising.  In the last 3 hours 18mm of rain has been recorded at Carisbrooke.  There is a possibility the river could come out of bank at Foxes Lane and impact the aquatics centre at Vicarage Walk.

Our operational contractors have checked the debris screens and the river is flowing freely.

However, heavy rain falling on the already saturated Lukely Brook and Gunville stream catchments, has caused the river to rise rapidly. The river will continue to affect the area over the next 4 hours, with up to 5mm of additional rain expected.

As a precautionary measure, we encourage residents with properties immediately next to the river at Vicarage Walk to take action to protect property.
