Thanks to William for sending through details of fundraising which took place last weekend. Ed
Following the 9.0 magnitude Earthquake in the sea off Sendai, Japan on 11th March 2011 the Rotary Club of West Wight responded quickly to the impending Tsunami tragedy in the Pacific Area by organising a collection at the Freshwater Co-operative on Saturday 12th March to support the disaster relief effort which would be required.
The ShelterBox demonstrator was erected to show donors how one of our Rotary charities provides first line humanitarian aid to disaster victims.
Over £1,000 collected
Thanks to the generosity of the people of West Wight the magnificent sum of £1015 was collected in 8 hours.
Meanwhile, although the Tsunami which resulted from the Earthquake caused major damage in Japan, it fortunately did not propagate in strength to other areas of the Pacific.
As a result the raised funds will be focussed towards victims in Japan.
Through our Rotary International links, and in particular with the Ichikawa Civic Rotary Club, Chiba, Japan, we are making sure that the funds we raise are distributed quickly and directly to those in most need.
We are continuing to collect monies for those victims so if you wish to make a donation you can contact [email protected] for details.
Rotary District 1110 is setting up an Appeal Fund which will co-ordinate inputs for collections on the Island, Hampshire and surrounding areas. Details will be available shortly.
