Ryde Harriers: A round-up of recent races

Thanks to Tom for this round-up from the Ryde Harriers. Ed

It’s been a busy few weeks for Ryde Harriers so there is a lot of news to catch up on.

Early in February, ace off-roader Kristian Rowdon, took part in the challenging Meon Valley Plod, 21 miles of hills, mud and slog. He finished in a superb time of 2.58.19 to take 17th place in a field of over 150.

Also in February super-vet Pete Young (pictured) was awarded two ‘Best Performance’ certificates for the 2013 season from Hampshire Athletics. These were for V65 times of 39.02 for 10km at Eastleigh and 31.21 for five miles at Victory 5 in September.

100th Parkrun
Closer to home, Joy Furmidge completed her 100th Parkrun on Saturday. She was the tenth person on the Island to do it, the oldest lady and first Ryde Harrier.

She completed the 5km course in a time of 32.24 and was in position 121 out of 160 with an age grading of 59.88%.

New Forest race
Also this weekend, Harriers fielded athletes in two races on Sunday. Cherry Shannon, Sally Roberts and Abi Cooke took part in the John Austin Half Marathon.

The New Forest-based event was on trails and paths and the trio completed their runs in pleasing times. First home was Cherry in 1:44 taking the 1st vet 50 prize, then came Sally in 1:54 closely followed by Abi in 1:55.

Hampshire Road Race League
The other Sunday event was the next fixture in the Hampshire Road Race League – Salisbury 10 mile race.

The balmy conditions and attractive course made for an excellent day out with Harriers fielding men’s and women’s teams.

First home was Tom Blackwell in 1:03:41 followed by Sarah Kavanagh in 1:09:40 who came in just ahead of new Harrier Ben McEwan 1:09:48. Next up was Julie King in an excellent time of 1:14:12 with Pete Still close behind in 1:14:29.

Another pair close together were Mandy Womack 1:15:51 and Andy Lewis 1:15:57 whilst Brian Warren continued his superb form with a time of 1:19:26 some three minutes faster than his Ryde 10 time in February. The Harriers contingent was completed by Jonathan Norton 1:24:49, Bridget Lewis 1:31:08 and John Randles 1:36:25.

Next event
Ryde Harriers have their AGM at Ryde Rowing Club on Tuesday 25th March, 2014 to start at approximately 8.45 pm after the fivemile nominated run.
