Ryde Harriers take on the five mile scratch

Mary Norman:

Thanks to Tom for this latest report from the Ryde Harriers. Ed

The first five mile scratch race of 2014 for Ryde Harriers gave the racers in the club the opportunity to show a clean pair of heals to their competitors.

Points in this race go purely on positions, so it rewards those who go out hard or who have a good turn of speed. The course is a teaser as it never strays far from the start and even loops right in front of the finish after 5km. Sometimes the weary can be found walking with head hung low into the clubhouse at this point, it’s very tempting.

Gutsy performance from Mary Norman
Winner on the night for the men was Tom Blackwell in 31.50 closely followed by an excellent performance from Rowland Sillito to take the Vet 40 crown. Other Vet winners were Andy Lewis (V50) and Graham Maitland (V60).

For the women it took a typically gutsy performance from Mary Norman to hold off the challenge of Julie King. Kath Levrier was the other winner of the evening as she took the Vet 55 points.

Next run
The next event for runners is the final cross-country from Smallbrook Stadium on Sunday 8th February 11am.

It is the Authur Biggs handicap and is open to any runner who has competed in either of the previous two cross-country races this year.
