Following a collision, Ryde Pier railings are being pieced together again (Photos)

Just before 6am on Monday this week (15th December) a man driving up Ryde Pier had a “temporary lapse of concentration” and hit the Victorian railings to the west of the pier.

Luckily the railings prevented him from heading into the water, but the incident resulted in two sections of railings disappearing into the water below.

The broken railings were recovered at low tide on Tuesday morning.

Jigsaw puzzle
Fabricator-welder, Darren Dilk-Rivers, now has the job of repairing the Victorian railings. As you can see from his photos below, the damage resulted in the railings breaking into many pieces.

Darren reckons it’ll take about two weeks to put together the jigsaw puzzle of pieces before the railings can be repaired.

Safety barriers in place
The car suffered some damage, but not enough to stop the driver from continuing up to the top of pier and carry on his journey via the catamaran.

Temporary barriers have been put in place on the damaged section of the pier which is about two thirds up on west side.
