Ryde Rowing Club take on Coalporters and Wessex Junior Regattas

Thanks to Steve for this latest report from the Ryde Rowing Club. Ed

It was a very busy weekend for the Wightlink sponsored Ryde Rowing Club as the Club competed at the Hants & Dorset ARA Championship Regatta, at the Coalporters Rowing Club on the River Itchen in Southampton on the Saturday (7th June) and then the Club’s J15 Boys Squad travelled to Bryanston School, in Dorset, to be the sole Island representatives at the Wessex Region Junior Regatta on the Sunday, 8th June.

Coalporters Regatta
On the Saturday there was more success for the Club’s Men’s Junior Senior Four of Andy Hicks, Adam Edwards, Ollie Gove and James Cleary with coach Mick Jenner coxing who comfortably won their event to make it four out of four for the season.

Further success came in the Ladies Junior Pairs where Jodie Cocker and Steph Kissick (pictured) secured there third win of the season.

Ryde Rowing Club - Jodie Cocker and Steph Kissick:

Masters Sculler, Mick Jenner continued his good form in the Men’s Senior Sculling event with a third place in the final and the young Men’s Novice Crew of Jacob Redstone, Joel Smith, Tom Kearney and Matt Jeacock with Austin Smith coxing – who have an average age of just 15 – showed significant improvement – finishing second in their heat just missing out on a place in the semi —final.

Wessex Junior Regatta
On Sunday, seven members of the Ryde Clubs J15 squad competed in the Wessex Junior Regatta, hosted by Bryanston School and held on the River Stour that runs through their extensive grounds.

The squad of – Tom Kearney, Ben Toms, Steven Soal, Jacob Redstone Dominic Douglas, Joe Groves and Cox Paddy Kearney competed in a range of boat types – single sculls, Coxed Quad, Coxed Four and double sculls – within their age group.

While all those competing produced good performances the results were a little frustrating – with two crews – the J15 Coxed Four of Tom Kearney, Dom Douglas, Jacob Redstone, Joe Groves and Cox Paddy Kearney and the J16 Coxed Four – where Ben Toms and Steven Soal replaced Jacob and Tom – both being defeated in their respective Finals – along with Jacob Redstone who reached the final of the J15 “C” classification single sculls – and all showing great promise for the future.
