Ryde School dominates RYA Match Racing Championships with top two wins

Ryde School sailing teams claim first and second place in the RYA Schools’ Match Racing Championships

Last weekend in Weymouth Ryde School competed against other top schools in the RYA Schools’ Match Racing Championships and came away with both first and second place overall.

Only school win all races on first day
Two Ryde School teams faced opponents from Royal Hospital School, RGS Guildford, Sevenoaks School and Harrington School in Rutland and at the end of the first day both Ryde School teams were the only school to have won all their respective races.

Winds had been fairly light and the day was topped off with a friendly visit from the local dolphin. All teams were racing in Elliot 6m keelboats.

Racing hampered by mixed weather
Mixed weather conditions on the following two days meant racing was hampered by strong winds and intermittent heavy rain for slightly less glamorous conditions.

With continued effort and skill Ryde ended up taking the two final team places in a nail-biting Ryde VS Ryde final.

The ‘Ryde Black’ team (pictured above) of Fred, Killian, Annabelle and Sam won with the ‘Ryde Red’ team of Ruby, Zeb, Noah and Kai coming in second (pictured below ).

Manser: Brilliant sailing performances
Claudia Manser, Director of Sailing at Ryde was rightly happy about the result saying,

“Brilliant sailing performances for both teams and amazing to come away from the event as winners and second place.

“As a school we are delighted to have claimed the 2023 RYA Schools’ Match Racing Championship title and the NSSA trophy.”
