This Cowes Week, Medina Bookshop is offering visitors and locals the chance to enjoy an inspiring programme of maritime history, sailing stories, music and author events, providing a cultural haven just moments from the excitement on the water.
Running throughout Cowes Week, the independent High Street bookshop has curated four unique events celebrating the Island’s rich nautical heritage, with something for sailors, history enthusiasts, music lovers and readers alike.
Sunday 2 August – An Evening with Shep Woolley and Tim Walker (7pm, £15)
Cowes Week begins in fine style with legendary sea shanty performer Shep Woolley, joined by fiddle player Tim Walker for an entertaining evening of music, stories and laughter.
Bringing together traditional maritime songs and fascinating tales from the sea, this promises to be one of the week’s most memorable evenings.
Tuesday 4 August – Meet the Authors: Des Pawson and Katie Daysh (from 6pm, FREE)
Visitors are invited to drop into the bookshop for an informal evening with two acclaimed maritime authors.
World-renowned knot expert Des Pawson and acclaimed Age of Sail novelist Katie Daysh will be chatting with readers, signing books and sharing their passion for life at sea. It’s a perfect opportunity to meet two of the UK’s leading maritime writers in a relaxed setting.
Wednesday 5 August – ‘There Is No Second’ with Magnus Wheatley (7pm, £5)
Renowned sailing journalist and America’s Cup historian Magnus Wheatley presents a fascinating talk exploring the extraordinary origins, rivalry and enduring mystique of the America’s Cup.
Titled There Is No Second, the evening offers a compelling insight into one of sailing’s greatest prizes during the world’s most famous sailing regatta.
Thursday 6 August – East Cowes Shanty Singers: Songs of the Sea (7pm, £12.50)
The week concludes with a rousing evening of traditional sea songs as the East Cowes Shanty Singers fill Medina Bookshop with the sounds of the sea.
Expect stirring harmonies, audience participation and a celebration of maritime heritage that perfectly captures the spirit of Cowes Week.
