For the second night running, last night, Cowes RNLI lifeboat had to go to the aid of the crew of a yacht crossing the Solent to attend the weekend’s Isle of Wight Festival.
This time there were two men aboard the 25 foot Hoka-Hey, unable to make headway under sail in the Force 8 southwesterly and having engine failure. The bilge keel boat, which had set out from Emsworth in Portsmouth Harbour, had called Solent Coastguards for assistance while in Osborne Bay.
Seasickness took over
Cowes lifeboat was able to quickly respond because it was on exercise at the time. When it arrived on the scene the crew found that one of the men was too seasick to play any active part on the yacht.
After lifeboat helmsman Max Rimington put crew member Chris Adams on board the yacht was towed to its intended destination on the east bank of the River Medina: Island Harbour.
On Wednesday night the lifeboat raced to Osborne Bay to go to the aid of a 34 foot motor-cruiser taking on water. The crew were also planning to attend the festival which occupies a site on the east bank of the River Medina at Newport.
