The reopening of Shanklin cliff lift, which had been scheduled for tomorrow (Saturday 25 July), has been put back for final health and safety approval.

Inspectors attended the site on Friday 24 July with the expectation of signing off the works and enabling the lift to reopen to the public by the weekend, but were unable to undertake an inspection due to the technical complexities of the lift.

A council spokesperson said:

“Despite the best efforts of all concerned, a health and safety inspection has not been able to be completed on the cliff lift at Shanklin.

“This is very disappointing for everyone, but the health and safety of the lift is paramount and clearly it cannot be opened without this approval.”

In order for a new temporary bridge structure to be secured in place at the top of the Shanklin cliff lift shaft, the lift itself had to be decommissioned. In order for the lift to be approved from a health and safety perspective, it had to be recommissioned and checked accordingly.

It is now hoped the lift will receive a complete health and safety inspection by Tuesday (28 July), which will still enable it to open for the majority of the summer season
