Shanklin Rotary Sale

Shanklin Rotary Club launches massive two-week recycling sale at YMCA Winchester House

Last updated:

The Rotary Club of Shanklin are holding their massive annual two week recycling sale from the Tuesday 9th to the Saturday 20th January 2024, this time at YMCA’s Winchester House (Sandown Rd, Shanklin PO37 6HU) 10am-4pm.

It is an annual “pop-up” event run uniquely and solely by Shanklin Rotary, aided by over 40 local volunteers, for more decades than we can remember!

Collect (almost) everything under the sun
After distributing thousands of leaflets around the area, using a dedicated phone line and word of mouth, we accept and collect (almost) everything under the sun which can be used again: clothes, furniture, toys, books, pictures, tools, electricals, bric-a-brac, linen, CDs, gardening and sports
equipment.

Many purposes
There’s always great enthusiasm to see what will turn up each year and, although it is hard work, we have a good laugh with each other and the Islanders and visitors who attend the event.

We have found over the years that it helps to raise community spirit, recycles serviceable items and furnishes new goods to those who can make use of them in any way – all whilst collecting funds for local needs.

We are very grateful to the YMCA again for lending us their main hall, expanded by large marquees outside.

Funding good IW causes and organisations
Despite the time of year it is a warm community event which allows Shanklin Rotary to fund many good causes and organisations on the Island.

Around 5 per cent goes to international Rotary causes such as polio eradication, global eyesight and practical support for troubled zones abroad.

Recycling
Recycling is important to us, so we work hard at the end of the event to pass on any unsold items in good order to other charities who benefit from being able to serve the the community year-round. And we bulk sell the excess.

Community support
In the main, we work within the community, with the community and for the community and that will continue as long as we enjoy support from the locals!

Thank you to everyone who supports us and we hope to see you later on at the YMCA Winchester House.
