Carrier bags:

Small Business Saturday: Free parking for Christmas shopping

It might be only the beginning of November, but if you followed the advice of the Citizen’s Advice Bureau, you’ll already be planning your Christmas shopping.

For those who prefer to wait until December to start thinking about Christmas planning and shopping, you’ll be pleased to hear of an initiative that should help your pocket (in a small way) as well as the small independent businesses (in a large way) around the Island.

Support independent businesses
On Saturday 7th December, typically known as the busiest Christmas shopping day, the Isle of Wight council will not charge residents to park in any of its car parks (NB: offer doesn’t include on-street parking or private car parks).

Why go to Gunwharf or West Quay when with a little bit of exploration on the Isle of Wight you’ll be able to find plenty of interesting and quirky Christmas presents for your friends and family?

The official word
The scheme is being launched in collaboration with Isle of Wight Chamber of Commerce and the Federation of Small Businesses and is hoped will become a regular annual event.

The Isle of Wight Council’s cabinet member responsible for tourism and economy Shirley Smart, said:

“We hope by waiving charges in our car parks for a day will encourage lots of people to visit towns and villages and buy local for Christmas.

“Businesses can also play a part to take advantage of the increase in shoppers. Perhaps they can offer special deals or vouchers, maybe free refreshments for example to try and entice the extra people through their doors.

“This is a wonderful opportunity to support local business ahead of Christmas and I am sure it will be welcomed by the public and business owners.”

Councillor Jon Gilbey is responsible for resources which includes parking. He added:

“This day demonstrates our commitment in supporting local businesses.

“The council is currently developing a new parking strategy and this event fits in with our new approach to the way we want to make council car parks more accessible and affordable to Island residents and visitors.”
