Solent LEP seeking business leaders to join board

This in from the Solent LEP, in their own words. Ed

The Solent Local Enterprise Partnership (LEP) is seeking a prominent business leader to join its Board of Directors.

solent-lep-logo-2012At the same time, the LEP is also looking for new businesses operating in the Solent to join as members.

The Solent LEP board takes responsibility for shaping economic strategy in the region, including the development of a £2.4bn Strategic Economic Plan.

The board is specifically seeking applications from business leaders working in aerospace, aviation, high-end manufacturing, logistics, ports and key international gateways.

LEP membership is open to any business active in the Solent. Members have the opportunity to vote on the way the LEP operates, elect board members and get involved in its important work.

Gary Jeffries, chairman of the Solent LEP, said:

“To help us develop the strongest possible economic plan, we are specifically seeking to appoint a senior business leader from a key sector that will complement the existing strengths of the board.

“We also need to increase our membership from the region’s business sector. I hope that we will receive many strong applications from what is a dynamic and innovative business community.”

Why only businesses? What about Union and community representation on the board of LEP? And why does this body consistently ignore the Isle of Wight?

Because, Mick, it’s a bit like if you have a darts club that’s open to all darters, you don’t invite swimmers. But of course swimmers can also be darters. In this case it’s a business community open to business people, but that does not preclude union members or members of the general public getting involved in business. In fact I think you will find that’s how all… Read more »

I didn’t know playing darts was a qualification for being on the board of LEP!

But more seriuosly, it’s a business community that spends taxpayers money so why shouldn’t there be Union and community involvement. Or is it just another subsidy for big business?

Mick, you’re right on every count. I have read the SLEP documentation with care and based on this the answer is, no, it’s not ‘just another subsidy for big business’. It’s a subsidy for new, small and expanding businesses, with an emphasis on enterprises that will improve the competitiveness of the Solent region, including the entire Isle of Wight. So this means money seeds new enterprise and… Read more »

The economic funding from Solent LEP mostly goes to Portsmouth and Southampton areas.

There are too many members of the LEP who some might regarded as having a conflict of interest. This applies equally to mainland members and island members. It should be opened up to, for example retired businessmen/women who have absolutely no current interests in and around the LEP zone to allow for objective and free thinking Now that Portsmouth has its own minister what impact will that… Read more »

Portsmouth/Gosport have applied for Assisted Area Status since Fallon became Minister for Portsmouth. Will this take funding away from the Isle of Wight?Fallon is also the BIS Minister for Assisted Area Status.Remember parts of the Island are already on the Draft Map for A.A.S.There is only limited A.A.S coverage across the UK.Let’s hope the Island does not lose out again.Portsmouth already has the City Deal.

Maybe Portsmouth are being conned too with promises of AAS. They do not meet most of the criteria for AAS on GDP or unemployment do they except criterion 5? Even their an emergency bid would seem to be dubious. Have the conditions in Portsmouth deteriorated so quickly to warrant consideration by the EU commission? I doubt whether it will be perceived that way. It’s amazing how quick… Read more »
