Steve Beynon’s Commitment On Release Of IWC Spending Data Broken

Despite repeated requests, assurances, failure to fulfil those assurances and a public commitment by Chief Exec Steven Beynon, the Isle of Wight council still hasn’t released the data on how it’s spending tax-payer’s money.

Steve Beynon - Eco IslandOver two weeks ago, Isle of Wight Council Chief Executive, Steve Beynon, publicly committed on Vectis Radio, during an interview with Ian Mac and Kevin Barclay-Jay, that the council would release their spending data on 24th January.

The council Comms department also confirmed this release date to VB later.

Many dates given and passed
This caused VB a lot of excitement because for over six months VentnorBlog has been asking IWC when they will comply with the Government’s directive to open this data to the public to look at.

Back in July VB was told that it would be “by the end of September,” then they told an Island resident, under a Freedom of Information request, that it would be made available by “end of the October 2010.”

Today, 25th January, there’s has been no announcement from the council, nor has the data appeared on the Website that the IWC are going to release them to.

Why?
We’ve asked the council about this yesterday and as yet, we haven’t heard back.

Update 09:50: We’ve also just written to Steve Beynon directly to ask …

Steve, why hasn’t the IWC spending data been released despite your
commitment to 24.Jan on Vectis Radio on 11 Jan?

When is it planned to be released now?

We’ll update this piece when we hear from him.

Update 11:30: Just heard back from Steve Beynon: “Good morning, we have had a small technical difficulty and we expect this data to be available in the next hour or so.”

Keep asking. My guess is they cannot bear for us to know what they spend our money on, even if the law says they have to tell us.

Silence is exactly what we now expect from this appallingly run council.

Well done, VB! Keep up the great work!

What has this man done for our council? Is he worth £170k? It does not sound like he is worth even £30k. These officers need their wages brought down to sensible levels. I’ve had enough of hearing “we need to pay a high wage to get the right people”. All they have done so far is fail, and that’s why we’re in the situation we’re in. Sack… Read more »

As they work for the people of the island, is it possible to sack them? Steve seems to have had 3 votes of no confidence already – how else might he be ejected?

We can all ask him if we wish. Go to the Council website iwight.com choose ‘a-z of services’ and you’ll find Chief Executive under ‘C’. There you’ll find two options: ‘Send a message’ or ‘Make a Complaint’. I guess it merely depends on how angry you are about this.

As a former teacher, he’s supposed to be a schools expert. Maybe that’s why our exam results are still among the worst in the country?

If we can’t get rid of him, maybe we could give him a detention, or some lines? I must do better, written 200,000 times, once for every pound he’ll cost us this year.

the contract becomes null and void if he is sacked for gross misconduct. That could be as little as failing to publish data when he says he is going to, or as much as… well, you get the idea. The problem as I see it is that he is actually employed by the council as an entity, not by us. We may pay his wages, but the… Read more »

To be fair to Steve, he can’t help it, he’s probably trying his best. But who picked him? Was it the same people who selected Duckworth? Was it the same people who selected the other highly paid ‘Directors’ who left after 5 minutes in the job over here. If Beynon goes, and I think he should, (if for no other reason that we appear to have lost… Read more »

It’s a good question – who does the interviewing a selection?

Also, given that the departing execs seem to receive handsome payouts when they go, I wonder what the total pay for each exec position is over the last 10 years?
