Still a Chance to Sail-Away with the Island’s Olympians

Jo Richards:There are still just a few places left for the Olympic Cruise from Cowes, in aid of the local RNLI lifeboat station appeal.

Taking place on the afternoon of Wednesday 18 July, the cruise will give people a chance to meet ‘real Olympians’ and have their photographs taken with them. One of the Olympians will be Major Barrington-Ward, who carried the flame for the 1948 London Olympic Games and crewed a Dragon at the subsequent Helsinki Olympics.

Flying Dutchman dinghy bronze medallist
Also in the line-up will be Jo Richards (pictured above), a Flying Dutchman dinghy bronze medallist at the 1984 games, and Pete Newlands who competed in the same games in the 470 dinghy class. Also hoping to be present is Shirley Robertson, who won golds in the Europe class dinghy at the 2000 Sydney games and in the Yngling class in Athens four years later.

The cruise will be aboard the Cowes-based Wight Scene tripper vessel, a large catamaran with three decks. During its two-hour duration passengers will be able to enjoy a cream tea and dance to Chick Cole’s band. Host for the cruise will be the Island’s most decorated former RNLI coxswain, Dave Kennett, who is now chairman of Yarmouth Lifeboat.

Complete an order form
Order forms for the cruise, which starts at 4 pm and ends at 6 pm on 18 July, can be obtained from the Cowes RNLI shop or Murrays Restaurant, both of which are in Cowes High Street. The cruise takes place in the same week when yachts from a number of countries will be involved in the Cowes-based Eight Metre Worlds event.
