Ryde High PupilsFollowing a decision taken by Ryde High School last year to devote their tutor time to learning about the Island’s participating in the NatWest Island Games, a competition was set up for each of year 9 and 10 tutor groups to prepare a display about one of the competing Islands.

The displays were judged by David Ball, Chairman of the Island Games Association (IW) – and the winning team was announced as ‘St. Helena’.

World Cup Draw
The Islands were allocated to 11 tutor groups across years 9 and year 10, each consisting of 25 – 30 students, on the basis of a World Cup type draw, and the following Islands were drawn from the hat : Alderney, Bermuda, The Cayman Islands, Hitra, Gibraltar, Gotland, Greenland, Orkney, Prince Edward Island, St. Helena and Ynys Mon.

The students were tasked with providing as much information as possible in a visually attractive and innovative way, and started work on their displays in the Autumn term 2010.

David Ball, Chairman of the Island Games Association (IW) said : “I was impressed by the overall quality of the entries and particularly by the research that the students had put into their project. Judging was not easy and this reflected the clear enthusiasm of both students and staff for the whole concept of the NatWest Island Games.”

In addition, students in year 9 studying ‘My World’ have been learning about the different Islands involved in the Games and have prepared a display in the main school corridor for when the athletes visit the school in June to compete in the Badminton competition which is being held on the school site.
