An amazing feat too place on Saturday in Gurnard.
Around 200 Islanders turned out to watch eleven swimmers take part in a charity sea swim.
Despite near-freezing temperatures, the enthusiastic swimmers took on the challenge of the 300 metre course.
Congratulations to all who took part, but especially open-water swimmer Dave Pearce who took first place.
The same goes to 13 year old, Georgia Caws, who was the only swimmer to complete the full course without a wetsuit coming second and Michelle Lock, for third place. Michelle was one of those representing WightTri – Triathlon Club.
A special prize went to Gary Martin, for “participating in the best charitable spirit”, by taking part in a rainbow hat, Hawaiian shirt and sandals.
The event was organised by Ben and Jack Cooke and Holly Siddons, with monies raised going to Macmillian Cancer Support.
Ben Cooke, Head Chef at The Little Gloster said, “At this festive time – it is great to be able to raise awareness and give something back to such a worthwhile cause, so close to our hearts. The turnout was fantastic – so we look forward to bringing other unique events to Gurnard in the coming future.”
Christian Beasley from Virtually Wight was on hand with his video camera to capture the challenge, which looked very, very cold (see below).
Jack Cooke commented, “The atmosphere on the day was absolutely great – with such a mix of fantastic people coming to support the charity and to visit our Christmas Market. Christmas should be a time to give,
share and bring people together – and we certainly achieved that.”
Well done to everyone involved. A fantastic way to show your support.
