Taylor Ton Leaves Ventnor Cricket Club Bottom

Thanks to Graeme for this update from Ventnor Cricket Club. Ed

Cricket BatA superb, unbeaten innings of 141 from Jimmy Taylor underpinned Totton & Eling’s thumping 164 run victory over Ventnor in the ECB Southern Electric Premier Division at blustery Newclose on Saturday.

Taylor’s efforts left the Islanders bottom of the table with a visit to second placed Bashley next up on Saturday.

The day had begun promisingly for the home team with Charlie Freeston dismissing danger man Dave Taylor cheaply, and when Mark Holmes accounted for Eysele and Augustus, the visitors were in a spot of bother on 61-3. Adam Wilson and Jamie Miller took two middle order wickets at 175-5, but Taylor remained to lead his side to 247 all out, Ventnor skipper Ian Hilsum’s six over spell bringing him 5-23 at the tail end of the innings.

What followed was another disappointing batting display, only Chris Ridley (17) and Jamie Miller (16 not out) managing double figures in a meagre total of 83, Jimmy Taylor completing a man of the match performance with 4-26.

Brighter news for Hilsum’s struggling side is the likely return from injury of paceman Elliot Wilson and all-rounder Adam Hose on Saturday.

Woodhouse leads the way for Ventnor
Ventnor’s second team march on at the top of Hampshire League Division 2.

Their latest success, by 54 runs at Cadham on Saturday, maintained their unbeaten run to set up a first versus third clash with Shrewton at Steephill on Saturday.

It was a splendid innings from Ben Woodhouse which formed the basis of Ventnor’s total of 245-6, the young opener cracking 6 fours and 4 sixes before falling just one short of a fine century. Middle order knocks of 33 from Gary Cooper, 29 from Mark Whyte and 30 not out from brother Andy gave the innings late impetus and ensured Cadham were set challenging target.

The home side started well enough, reaching 55 without loss, before Andy Whyte got to work. The paceman bowled an impressive six over spell to take 3-8, turning the match Ventnor’s way before Ben Clarke’s return of 2-39 pegged the home team further back as they closed on 191-7.

The only down side for the Islanders was an extras total of 42 that included 27 wides.

Semi final success for Ventnor’s Under 13s
Ventnor defeated Northwood by 123 runs to book a place in the Island final of the ECB Under 13 knock out competition.

Scores of 30 a piece from Ross Whyte, James Attrill and Ben Herridge led their side to 161-4 before dismissing the Cowes side for only 38, Harry Ridley and William Fawdry each taking three wickets.
