Isle of Wight Executive member for Children’s Services, Jonathan Bacon, has written to the Secretary of State to see whether teachers’ salaries on the Isle of Wight could qualify for a boost.
In the same way as those working in London receive ‘London weighting’ to their salaries, Cllr Bacon is asking whether salaries on the Isle of Wight could be boosted with an equivalent to the ‘London Fringe Allowance’, which is available in Harlow, St Albans, South Bucks and Surrey.
Cllr Bacon says,
“A recurring issue is the ability to recruit good teachers.
“Accordingly I have written to the new Secretary of State asking whether there is any scope for a weighting to salaries to be brought into effect equivalent to the London Fringe Allowance which is available in areas such as Harlow, St Albans, South Buckinghamshire and the whole of Surrey.”
We’ll let you know how he gets on.
