Tennis players raise more than £2,000 for Dementia UK Admiral Nurses IW Appeal

A cheque for £2284.20 was presented to Sally, Lady Grylls, President of the Dementia UK Admiral Nurses IW Appeal, by Chris Goodman, the retiring organiser of the West Wight Tennis Tournament.

Chris explained,

“On one of the hottest days in July, 50 tennis players showed their passion and their commitment to the sport by competing in the annual West Wight Tennis Tournament.

“Each year this popular tournament is played at various venues around the West Wight with the final and buffet lunch being held at Westover House in Calbourne, courtesy of Mrs Caroline Weeks.”

Supports a different charity each year
The annual event supports a different charity each year, and this year saw proceeds being raised in aid of Dementia UK Admiral Nurses Isle of Wight.

Receiving the cheque for £2284.20, from retiring tournament organiser Chris Goodman, are Sally, Lady Grylls (president), Catherine Flury (retiring chair) and Ron Holland (treasurer). Also shown are Caroline Weeks, owner of Westover House, joint tournament organiser Neil Cain, tournament volunteer John Clarke and tournament winners Adam Pay and Nicky Bennett. (Joint organiser David Robinson was unavailable).

Hopes for an Admiral Nurse back at Mountbatten
Lady Grylls said,

“Thank you very much to all of you for making so much money.

“It’s such a fantastic charity to support because everyone knows someone with dementia. I do hope that we can have an Admiral Nurse back at Mountbatten soon, and we are actively searching for a benefactor who could make that happen.”

Retiring Chair of the Dementia UK Admiral Nurses, Catherine Flury said,

“Thank you so much for this wonderful donation, and the support of the West Wight Tennis tournament committee.”

Other support
Chris also thanked all the numerous businesses that had supported the West Wight tournament by kindly donating items for the buffet and the fantastic catering team from St Catherine’s School Ventnor, who will be the chosen charity for next years’ tennis tournament.
