The next stage for the Ellen MacArthur Trust was announced at last night’s Ellen MacArthur Trust Ball in Cowes.
The Trust takes children who have have recovered from cancer and leukaemia sailing to help them regain the confidences that they have lost during their treatment.
Skandia were announced as the sponsors of The Ellen MacArthur Trust Skandia Round Britain ‘Voyage of Discovery,’ which, starting in May 2009, will see 100 children sail around the UK stopping at 20 ports on the way.
The 2,500 miles journey is starting in Cowes (Isle of Wight) and then heading east to Dover, St. Catherine’s Dock (London), Ipswich, Hull, Newcastle, Edinburgh, Aberdeen, Fort George, Fort William, Largs, Belfast, Isle of Man, Liverpool, Hollyhead, Cardiff, Torquay, Southampton (Boat Show), finishing in Cowes in September 2009.
In the trip they will also be visiting hospitals around the country, many where those on board received treatment.
One of the great upsides of the hospital visits is that children who are currently combating cancer will be visited by other children who have conquered the disease and are feeling much better.
For Skandia, who is having their final year of sponsoring Cowes Week, it’s a very powerful way for them to continue a connection with sailing.
Here’s a video from the EMT that outline the hopes and ambitions of the EMT Skandia Round Britain 2009 trip.
