Val Taylor has contributed a considerable amount of her time to the Isle of Wight over the years.
In the past she has, among other things, been a mid-wife, a county councillor and a governor at Sandown High.
These days it’s little different – she gives her time to community projects, is a Ventnor town councillor, Sandown’s Town Clerk and has been Chairman of Governors at Media High school for ten years.
Quite often people who give so much to local areas aren’t necessarily officially recognised. Happily the ‘powers that be’ at Medina High decided that this shouldn’t continue.
When the new maths and IT building was coming to completion at Medina High, they approached Val to tell her that they were going to name it after her.
Predicting her resistance due to modesty, they only gave her two choices – Do you want it to use Val or Valerie?
Opening
On the 12th September Val wielded the scissors and cut the ribbon to the The Valerie Taylor Maths and ICT Classroom Block at the opening ceremony.
The centre cost over £1.7 million and incorporates 10 classrooms and 3 IT suites all equipped with state of the art equipment.
Forward looking, as they must have been when they were considering the building, it has green credentials through the use of heat exchange pumps.
Medina High hasn’t stopped with the new building, they followed that up by the total refurbishment of the science block, giving the school additional laboratories.
