We bet that when Ventnorians, Darren and Skinny, first started their boxing club in Ventnor for young people, they could only hope it would be the massive success that it has turned out to be.
What started off as a club in the small space under the stage at the Winter Gardens, has now blossomed into a three days a week hive of activity in a new, larger venue.
They’ve attracted not only the youth of Ventnor, but also adults and even put on Women-only boxercise classes too.
The club is now completely settled into its new venue at the old Baptist Methodist Church on Ventnor High Street and some of you might have been lucky enough to catch some of their afternoons of exhibition boxing at the Mill Bay Inn on the seafront over the last year or so.
Coming Up
This coming weekend, the Ventnor Amateur Boxing Club will be putting on another of their popular Boxing matches to raise funds to continue the excellent work they’ve started.
Ventnor’s super heavy weight, Danny Harper will be hoping to reverse a points decision by being re-matched with his old adversary George Georgeakaris from Portsmouth.
Also on the programme will be Ventnor’s Danny Green, light weight, Callan O’Hearn welter weight, George Borrott light welter weight, Rob Smith cruiser weight & Junior Connor Black.
Check out the full details along with other events on the Isle of Wight.
Thos involved with the club also tell us that thanks to the advice & support of Mark Meredith, South Wight Housing Association’s Community Involvement Officer, the club has secured grants from Sports UK & South Wight Housing Association, enabling to improve its training facilities & equipment.
