It’s that time of year again when we start thinking about the forthcoming festivals. Jack’s been in touch with info about this year’s Ventnor Fringe Festival. In his own words. Ed
Following a hugely successful second year, which saw artists applications triple, the Ventnor Fringe has now opened applications to perform at the Festival this summer, when it returns from the 15th – 18th of August 2012, to coincide the 123rd annual Carnival celebrations.
Founded in 2010 by a team of teenagers, the Ventnor Fringe is fast growing to become one of the most exciting and up and coming events on the Island.
Open artistic policy
Inspired by the Edinburgh Fringe, the Festival has an open artistic policy allowing anyone to take part, and welcomes artists from across the world in a huge variety of disciplines, from comedy to music, film to theatre, performing in venues as varied as converted empty shops, churches, buses, and courtyards across the town.
Over the past two years, over 200 artists have taken part, with acts including intimate performances from Johnny Flynn, Dizraeli and the Small Gods, Marques Toliver, Hand to Mouth Theatre, London’s String Theatre, Brighton’s famous Ragroof Theatre, Replica Dance Company and a unique cinema run by the prolific French film Director Vincent Moon and cellist Gaspar Claus.
Great artist’s pilgrimage
The festival aims to become a ‘great artist’s pilgrimage’ and return Ventnor to it’s roots as a health spa and source of inspiration for artists, as it was for many famous Victorian creatives, developing a new hub for artists and audiences to discover, experiment and celebrate new work.
Acts keep ticket sales
Anyone can enter the event with a fee of £25 for one performance, £40 for two or more and no charge if the event is free on entry.
Acts keep all of their own ticket sales and the Fringe then helps artists find a suitable venue, promote their act and negotiate discounts for accommodation and travel.
The deadline for applications is the 1st of June 2012.
