Ventnor In The Guardian

If you’re a Guardian reader, you may well have been surprised to see Ventnor’s beach beaming out at you from the pages of the colour supplement, recommending all of their readers to Move to Ventnor.

Overall the article was incredibly positive about Ventnor – in fact, it couldn’t really have sounded better, receiving the ultimate accolade in the property-obsessed times that we live in, “I tell you, if I had any inheritance, this is where I’d buy my little hideaway.”

Surprised in the way it described Ventnor as “prim, middle-class” – don’t recognise that about Ventnor in the slightest and it failed to point out the obvious and missed out the vital bohemian influence in town.

For us, it wasn’t all smiles – after the paper’s request for info was highlighted on the forum, we wrote to them with tonnes of background on the area, some of which appeared in the article.

Hugely disappointed that they didn’t credit us, shows a lack on integrity on their part. Apparently it’s not unusual action for the Guardian – they did it to us about two years ago in an article about the Island, and explicitly asked us for information – which they used – and didn’t credit. Pleased to see that NatureNet/Matt & Cat got a mention though.

As to why they didn’t mention one of the most popular, vibrant local blogs in the UK (thanks to you readers) in the piece where it’s based, can only be guessed at :)

All is not lost, as anyone who searches for Ventnor on Google is going to find the Blog as the third result anyway – Yipee!

“Many forces trying to prevent the event”
Err…Like the Police Force?

Ticket holders for WOWfest 2012 will be refunded
(One day)

Good. This was never going to work.

”Full refunds will be given”

Is that the Red Arrows again or do pigs really fly?

I think that it is very good idea that the two running this event never be allowed to run an event ever for the island, as these organisers have a bad record of running events and not paying their bills. Ask yourself something if they can afford to keep paying for adverts on buses and every where else why are they not paying their debts off that… Read more »

Does no one think that claiming the stroke was caused by the stress from this is laying it on a bit thick? I’m not suggesting anything other than sympathy for him, before anyone takes me wrong. Also, claiming the pressure to be “undue and untimely” is ridiculous, this group of people shoudld never have been allowed to consider setting up another event, let alone get this far… Read more »

Methinks the lady doth protest too much… It is interesting that the organisers have sought to blame everyone else for their inability to come up with the advance payments required. The lengthy epistle from the Ivory Towers of WOW says it all. If they were trying to downsize the event to 4999 attendees at the last minute, in order to escape the application of the Isle of… Read more »

Perhaps it is finally time for Snellen and Ward to review the policy of not paying people what is owed. This is a very small island. There are consequences.

No amount of insisting ‘we don’t owe anything’ (which may be legally true as the debts may well be in the name of now defunct limited companies) can protect their names from being mud.

The names of the organisers and their numerous (failed) companies are well known in the musical community for all the wrong reasons, thanks to a well publicised ‘black listing’ by the Musicians Union and also by word of mouth. No jazz players who are MU members will contemplate accepting a booking from these two clowns. Irrespective of the legalities and their attempts to shield themselves from media… Read more »

Having a look online for Snellen and Ward, I found a linkdin profile. Hilarious reading! Boasting of their successes as music event organisers. Apparently they’re ”taking a break” from the jazz festival. It will return. I’ll give them one thing. They have incredible cheek.

“Keep it in the calendar”??? What calendar – the failed festivals which never had a cat in hells chance calendar? Messrs Snellen and Ward have no one to blame except themselves on this issue – unfortunately for them you cannot get away with leaving a trail of debts behind them on a small island It’s also clear that they couldn’t organise a festival if the Council report… Read more »

The message might sink into the ‘organisers’ (who have failed in their task) that people don’t want yet another Micheal Mouse ‘festival’ on their doorstep. The police have been correct to ask for funds up front, which (surprise, surprise) haven’t been met. I think the IOWCC should take measures to avoid a relapse of nonsensical, perphical music festivals from attempting to go ahead by banning them. As… Read more »

I just read the website Terms & Conditions.

It says they will refund the actual price paid for a ticket – but not any booking fees paid. Nor will they be responsible for ferry and accommodation bookings.

Does anyone seriously expect them to pay out refunds? Would you bet against them leaving a trail of unpaid bills in their wake?

It’s usual practice for just the face value to be refunded.

Perhaps trading standards should be looking into this. Monkton Mead outfall has nothing on these guys.

I suspect that in the near future Inspector Knacker plus various debt agencies will be looking for the directors……..don’t forget Baron Smith, ‘Finance Director, he’s the landlord of the festival offices and the Music Shop. Also don’t bother going to the Pier Street address – they are long gone…….we ain’t seen nothing yet!!!!

I have read that the police bosses were against this festival as the organisers had not paid up front for policing. Additional police cover should be paid for by the organisers and should not be met by the tax payer – definately. In terms of cover, under the governments new review police officers will be asked to work this for single rate on their days off. Where… Read more »

The reason no one wanted this stupid festival is clear if you read the comments…The organisors are not fit for the job, police new it, council new it, local residents new it….The payment upfront was a way of exposing their bad management and hopefully closing this unsavory episode for ever
